A summer full of black flies. A summer full of “don’t you wish you had a boyfriend?” A summer full of fault lines from fracking nearby and sunshine and flash floods cracking the sidewalk outside of your apartment. A summer full of “there’s a murderer on the loose” games with your best friend where the two of you take turns pretending to be victims of horrific crimes. Sneaking into each other’s apartment and sprawling out on the bathroom floor, real sweat mixing in with the fake blood is all it takes to destroy the illusion. A summer full of working at McDonalds working for the downstairs neighbor creepy Ricky king of the fry cooks been with McDonald’s since the building sprouted up from the abyss a reverse sinkhole a spotlight a strong arm a sacred lamb. You can see the water from anywhere in town but through the McDonald’s windows with Creepy Ricky’s diet Dr Pepper breathe on your shoulder it’s a different color blue and you can see all the abandoned objects at the bottom of the lake. And the way they beckon like a charm bracelet all shine and slime and this one still moment where the water is silent despite the earths constant churning despite all the men hard at work to find new ways to kill you.
